Development of an Automatic Flight Control System according to SAE-ARP4754A

Abstract

This presentation gives an overall understanding of the basic steps of an Automatic Flight Control System (AFCS) development processes. The distribution of the topics are made according to SAE-ARP 4754A – guidelines for development of civil aircraft and systems. The slides include applied steps and appropriate examples from AFCS development planning and development processes as well as design integrity elements. The transition conditions of development phases and their corresponding outputs will be also introduced during the presentation. Thanks to flow diagrams, the development processes can be seen comprehensively. Further, the safety aspects of the AFCS will be given in main topics. Many systems engineering topics like requirements capturing, V&V and testing will be held in details.
About the Presenter

Abdullah Vural received the M.Sc. degree in Electronics from the Kaiserlaslautern Technical University, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany and B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Yildiz Technical University, İstanbul, Turkey. He is currently working as a Design Expert Engineer in Flight Mechanics and Autopilot Systems Department at Helicopter Division of Turkish Aerospace Industries Inc . He has been working on safety, system design, test, certification and system development related issues. He used to work as a Project Manager in Electrical Systems at Caterpillar Energy Solutions GmbH for 6 years, Mannheim, Germany. He received DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) study award in 2004 and TÜBİTAK (The Scientific Technological Research Council of Turkey) study award in 1999.

Integrated Communication, Navigation and Identification Approach,
Avionics in One Box

Abstract

This presentation gives an overall understanding of the development steps of an integrated system which consists of Communication, Navigation and Identification functions, combined within a Software Defined Radio architecture. The content will mainly be based on a Software Defined Radio concept and the distribution of functions within this architecture. The slides will include Technology Maturation Processes which are currently being followed, Technology-Product Relations and as well as Technology Readiness Level approach which were defined in Technology Readiness Assessment (TRA) Deskbook by Department of Defense, US.

E. Zeynep ŞEMŞİR received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from METU, Ankara, Turkey. She is currently working as Systems Engineer in Strategy and Technology
Development Department at Aircraft Division of Turkish Aerospace Industries Inc . She had experience as Avionics Systems Engineer in integration of Navigation and Identification Systems and Weather Radar
in modernization programs (ERCİYES, etc.) and indigenous programs (HÜRKUŞ-B). She is now technical responsible of ICNI Technology Development Project in TF-X Project.

Integrated Electro-Optic System for New Generation Fighters

Abstract

This presentation gives an overall understanding of the development steps of an integrated electro-optic system which mainly consists of Infrared Search and Track (IRST), Electro Optical Targeting System (EOTS), Missile Warning System (MWS), Electro Optical Spherical Sensing System (EOS3) and Directed Infrared Countermeasure (DIRCM) systems. The content will be mainly based on the operational needs for EO/IR systems and the aircraft level constraints for new generation fighters.

Buket ÇELİK received the B.Sc. degree in Physics from Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey. M.Sc. degree in Micro and Nanotechnology from METU and TÜBİTAK (The Scientific Technological Research Council of Turkey) study award in 2007. She is currently working as EO Systems Engineer in Strategy and Technology Development Department at Aircraft Division of Turkish Aerospace Industries Inc . She had experience as infrared signature measurement, modelling and analysis specialist at TÜBİTAK İLTAREN for 3 years. She is now technical responsible of IEOS Technology Development Project in TF-X Project.

Integrated RF System for New Generation Fighters

This presentation gives an overall understanding of an Integrated RF System which consists of Radar and Electronic Warfare (EW) functions of new generation fighters, combined within a common aperture, hardware, and software architecture. The content will be mainly based on the operational needs for RF systems and the aircraft level constraints for new generation fighters.

Eda S. ATA received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey. She is currently working as RF Systems Engineer at Strategy and Technology Development Department of Turkish Aerospace Industries Inc. Aircraft Division for IRFS Technology Development Project of TF-X Project. She has been working in Defense Industry for 10 years. She has gained experience in RF/Microwave Design at NANOTAM, MIKES Inc. and RF Systems Engineering at Meteksan Defense, RST Inc., respectively. She had worked in projects such as MİLKAR RF Jammer, SPEWS-II, MILDAR (Milimetre Dalga Radar), X-band Polarimetric Weather Radar.

LET’S PUT OFF SOME WEIGHT, SHALL WE? SINGLE LRU, MULTIPLE SOLUTIONS

Abstract

Weight is one of the most highlighted issue in aircraft design. Apart from program type, whether it is a modernization, new development or retrofit, it is always the critical issue from the T0 of the projects. Implementing multiple functions on a single avionics LRU is getting popular in recent years with strict weight restrictions of the air platforms. The flying examples are still rare. A symbol generator/rudder assist system is being developed by TAI for Hürkuş B aircraft project. Symbol generation and rudder trim surface control are completely different functions of the aircraft which will be implemented in a single LRU. Shared resources from hardware and software aspects are the challenging parts of the design. Determining the design assurance levels of separate functions and managing separate requirement sets are the key points avionics system design engineer must focus her/his attention. Challenging as it is, it is also very delightfull to have multiple functions on a single LRU. In this presentation; gained expreinces, encountered design challenges and design constraints from this project will be shared.
About the Presenter

Tolga İNAL took his BSc degree from Ankara University Science Faculty Physics Department in 2003. He got his Master of Education graduate degree from Ankara University Institute of Education in 2005 and got his MSc degree from Ankara University Institute of Science Department of Physics Engineering in 2007. He still continues his PhD studies at the same university in department of Electrical-Electronics Engineering. He started his career, in 2005, as a research assistant where he got his MSc degree. He has been working for Turkish Aerospace Industries since 2008 as avionics system design engineer in aircraft group. His main experience and focus lies within indicating, navigation and flight control systems.

Nilgün ALTIN took her BSc degree from Gazi University Engineering&Architecture Faculty Electrical & Electronics Department in 2000. She got her MSc degree from Hacettepe University Graduate School of Science and Engineering in 2003 and got her PhD degree from the same department in 2012. She started her career, in 2000, as a research assistant where she got her MSc degree. She has been working for Turkish Aerospace Industries since 2005 as avionics system design engineer in aircraft group. Her main experience and focus lies within indicating, navigation, communication and radar systems.

Development of Graphical Interface via Generation of Data File Memory (DFM)

Abstract

This presentation includes an overview of design and development of Graphical Interface editor according to the specified graphical commands driven by a FPGA. The software code is automatically generated according to these specific graphical commands rules. This approach of software development (domain specific modeling) gives lots of benefits over classical methods of software development in terms of reducing coding errors, excessive focus on design and increasing development speed. In the market, however there are various tools at high costs exist for this aim; at TAI, we’ve developed our visual design editor which satisfies our needs.The main topics in the presentation includes overview of the graphical commands, supported graphics styles, design principles of the graphical elements, design editor development, and generation of DFM.

İbrahim ARDIÇ received M. Sc. Degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Hacettepe University in 2015, B.Sc. degree in Computer Engineering and Electrical & Electronics Engineering at Eskişehir Osmangazi University in 2007. He is studying his Ph.D. degree in Computer Engineering at Hacettepe University. He is also working as a software engineer in TAI. 

Integration of Digital Flight Control Computer (SUKB) with National Real Time Operating System (GIS)

Abstract

SUKB Project whose customer is Turkish Defense Industry Under Secretariat (SSM) is completed by TAI in 2015. In this project Autopilot Modes and Electro-Mechanical Flight Control System are developed and applied on Hürkuş Training Aircraft in Iron Bird environment. In 2016, Integrity Operating System which was used for all SUKB software has been changed with GIS developed by TÜBİTAK-BİLGEM. This integration project
has high importance to use national real time operating system in other platforms especially in aviation domain. This presentation firstly
informs general concept of SUKB. After that, integration project phases of GIS to SUKB are explained step by step.

Murat VURAL received B.Sc. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at METU in 2011. He is studying his M. Sc. Degree in Information System at Informatic Institute/METU. He is also working as a software engineer in TAI.
